In collaboration with Yuki Aditya, Amal Ramsis, and Rodrigo Brum This program traces the legacy of the Afro-Asian Film Festival that took place in Cairo in March 1960, focusing on currents of Third World cinema that engage creatively with the social and political dimensions of their societies. In following this legacy, a group of programmers from several countries has collaborated to present a program of film screenings, discussions, and seminars at Zawya Cinema and Cimatheque – Alternative Film Centre in Downtown Cairo. The program bridges interest in that historically rich political and cultural period with contemporary cinematic productions that continue to explore social concerns—experimentally, in terms of production, and artistically. Over the course of ten days, we’ll watch a selection of cinematic classics alongside contemporary works, with discussions featuring the filmmakers.
