Part of 100 years of Youssef Chahine
Young, idealistic Gamal rebels against his father, a corrupt landlord and politician. He moves to the countryside with his wife, Dawlat, where they stay with his aunt and cousins. Effat, the aunt, has imposed excessively strict rules upon the household, forbidding her daughters from interacting with men. Yet she allows Gamal to stay, and the couple’s presence soon disrupts her rigid system, creating a conflict between old and new that extends to the public sphere when Gamal runs for a seat in parliament against his father. More tensions arise when a relationship develops between Gamal and his beautiful cousin Azhar.
