Zawya is proud to screen its first filmmaker retrospective in the presence of Syrian filmmaker Mohamed Malas. Mohammad Malas, born in 1945, is a prominent Syrian filmmaker. Malas directed several documentary and feature films that garnered local and international recognition. Malas directed his first feature film, Ahlam al-Madina ("Dreams of the City"), in 1983, and received first prize at the Valencia and Carthage film festivals. His second feature, Al-Lail received international recognition and won first prize at the 1992 Carthage Film Festival. However, the film was banned in Syria and was only screened for the first time in 1996. Al-Lail, along with Ahlam al-Madina, are the first and second parts of the triology that culminated with Malas’s recent film, Ladder to Damascus, produced in 2013.
