Zawya’s September program kicks off with a retrospective of one of this century’s most acclaimed directors, Stanley Kubrick. From the outer space of 2001: A Space Odyssey to WWI in Paths of Glory and the thrills of Jack Torrance at the Overlook Hotel, we explore the diverse worlds of Kubrick through a selection of seven titles. Stanley Kubrick directed around 16 films between features and documentary shorts throughout his career, the last of which was delivered to the studios mere hours before the director’s death. Kubrick has managed to leave us a lineup of films that have generated a set of iconic imagery distinctive of his work. We invite you to revisit the world of one of the most enigmatic filmmakers, some of which are showing for the first time in Cairo on the big screen. The seven films will be screened in order of chronology, allowing us to follow his body of work as it developed from his fascination with literary and historical epics to dark absurdist expression: Paths of Glory (1957), Lolita (1961), Dr. Strangelove (1964), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Barry Lyndon (1975), The Shining (1980) and Full Metal Jacket (1987). In creating the selection for this retrospective, we chose to screen Kubrick’s milestone films, bounded by copy availability.
