D-CAF film program this year will take place under the title “A walk on the Wild Side” and will feature six films from France, Bulgaria, Thailand and Italy. The program curator, Rémi Bonhomme, who is the program manager of Cannes Semaine de la Critique, described the film program as “a cinematic exploration of life on the fringes of society, in all its social, political and romantic dimensions. The six films showcased, all selected at the Cannes Film Festival, have broken down the barriers between both places and genres, by celebrating peripheral worlds and by focusing on characters that so often remain on the margins.” After visiting Cairo last year, Bonhomme was impressed by how artists and filmmakers in Cairo are pushed to the margins of society, which while challenging, can also allow them to create a small space in which to exercise their artistic freedom. Bonhomme decided to screen films that portray characters “on the fringes of society”, in the hopes that their compelling stories would resonate with the daily experiences of local artists and audiences.
