In partnership with Diwan Publishing, the Naguib Mahfouz Project and Rizo Masr, we are thrilled to present the Naguib Mahfouz film program at Zawya. The program celebrates Mahfouz’s legacy, the first Arab author to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988 and whose name is synonymous with Arab Literature. In addition to Mahfouz’s literary achievements which encompassed a total of 34 novels and more than 300 short stories, Mahfouz played a pivotal role in enriching Egyptian cinema with his screenplays and adaptations of his novels into some of the most notable films in Egyptian cinema throughout the 50s and 60s. The program showcases 7 narrative features of classical Egyptian cinema, 5 of which are adaptations from Mahfouz’s novels, and two films of his screenplay.
